Goals

This is a written and presentation assignment for improving students written and oral presentation skills. It also familiarizes students with computer ethics issues.

Part 1 Short Ethics Paper

Due date: 3/27/2013

Write a short paper on a computer ethics issue related to the ACM Code of Ethics that interests you. This is a relatively free form assignment that can be fun. There are many questions that interest me. Some examples:

• The ACM Code of Ethics includes “statements of personal responsibility, identifies the elements of such a commitment.” In another words, they are the ‘right ethical’ things to do. The code is not stated in the context of one career’s advancement. Are this code of conduct also the ‘right economic’ things to do?
• In Section 1.1 Contribute to society and human well-being, ACM Code of Ethics stated that: “An essential aim of computing professionals is to minimize negative consequences of computing systems, including threats to health and safety.” A computing game designer may design games to be as addictive as possible. However, addictive games contribute to poor health of gamers, including death in the extreme case. Discuss.
• The code states that “A computer professional has a duty to be honest about his or her own qualifications.” How do you reconcile this with the resume inflation phenomena?
• The ACM Code of Ethics applies to computing professionals. Can they be applied to computing companies? Are there any major changes needed?

You are not limited to these issues. Use your imagination. As in many ethical issues, there may not be any 'politically correct' answer. I am more interested in your arguments and presentations.

The paper should be between two to three pages, single-spaced, Times New Roman font and size 12. Turn in a MS words (.doc, not .docx) file. Use proper citations for references. The best work will be honored.

Submissions

• Name your paper as LastName_FirstName_h2.doc. For example, for Jenny Doe, it must be Doe_Jenny_h2.doc.
• Email your paper to both the instructor and the teaching assistant. The subject of the email should be: "CSCI 3333.3 HW#2 Ethic Paper.
• Failure to follow this guideline may result in reduced grade.

Part 2 Ethics Paper Revision

Due date: 4/10/2013

Your instructor will provide feedback to your paper. Revise the paper according to the feedback and turn in the revised paper using the same submission guidelines. However, the revised paper should be named as LastName_FirstName_h2_rev.doc.

Part 3 Ethics Paper Presentation

Presentation date:

Based on the revised paper, make a brief presentation of about 10 minutes (question and answer session included). Prepare powerpoint slides for your presentation. Instructor's feedback will be provided immediately after your presentation.

Submit your powerpoint file as usual, except that the file name should be LastName_FirstName_h2_presentation.ppt.
